3 Important Keys to Surviving Divorce
There are few experiences in life that are more difficult and “sweeping” than divorce. Researchers have found that only the death of a spouse has a greater impact on people’s lives. After going through it myself and helping over 5,000 people through our divorce mediation program, I have some advice that may seem obvious but is often overlooked.
- Fully Accept the Situation: Stop spending your efforts to keep the status quo and accept that everything in your life is going to change, perhaps for the better as time passes.
- Expect and Control Difficult Emotions: Fear, anxiety, anger and depression are “normal” emotions during divorce so work with a counselor to ensure that they are not “warping” your decisions.
- Keep Focused on the Future: There is nothing that can be done to change the past, but there is a great deal that can be done to impact the future so use all of your mental and financial powers to ensure that your future is good.
In our divorce mediation program, we see people every day in our Bucks, Montgomery, Lehigh, Chester and Philadelphia County offices. While each has a unique story-line, all face similar challenges. Whether clients are working with our divorce-mediators, co-parenting mediators or divorce tax experts, they are continually reminded to follow these three tips to survive and thrive after divorce.
