Happy New Year – Let’s get divorced!

Timing is Everything

Happy New Year – Let’s get divorced! After over 20 years of helping thousands of people through divorce, I have noticed that the greatest number of them choose to begin their divorce in January or February. There are three main reasons for this timing.

The New Year’s Resolution

1. The first has to do with a form of New Year’s Resolution which leads couples, who have struggled in their marriage for years, to make a resolution to put an end to it this year.

Holiday Meltdown!

2. The second reason is that holidays always bring stress as well as disappointment when the idealized view of the perfect holiday does not materialize. The holidays become the “straw that broke the camel’s back” in an already struggling marriage.

One More Holiday for the Kids

3. The third reason is that they want to get through one last holiday as an intact family before embarking on this major life change.

Divorce Litigation – Same Place, Next New Years’ Eve

Those who choose to hire two separate divorce litigation attorneys are likely to see one or more New Years pass without having their divorce completed. Their holiday stress is exacerbated when they have children who must somehow divide their time between two parents who are at war. Of course, there is a lot less money to spend on gifts after they have paid their exorbitant attorney’s fees.

Divorce Mediation – Start Next Year with a Clean Slate

Those who choose to handle their divorce through a divorce mediation program have a reasonable chance of having their divorce concluded before the next New Year celebration. When the next holiday season rolls around, they have a separate life with a clear picture of their individual financial security and an understanding of how to have a healthy co-parenting relationship for the benefit of their children.

If divorce is your New Year’s Resolution, be wise and choose a good divorce mediation program. It will be one of the hardest years of your life, but it will take a lot less time, money and stress.
