A Child’s Needs During Divorce

Children and Divorce

Here are some simple needs from a child trying to navigate through the emotional impact of a divorce.

I need to know that I am not responsible for my parents’ divorce.

I needmy parents to sit together with me to explain why they are divorcing and what they have planned for my future.

I need to spend time with both of my parents and not have them fight about it.

I need to have a regular daily and weekly routine with not too many changes.

I need to not have to blame or choose sides.

I need to be able to love both of my parents and have them both love me.

I need to love many people like family members and step parents and have them love me without feeling guilty. The more love I give, the more love I have.

I need to be able to say that I am afraid, or sad or even mad.

I need to not have to make adult decisions.

I need to never have to choose between my parents or where I should live.>/p>
